Early Cavity Detection Corvallis, OR

Detect Invisible Decay with the Latest Laser Technology

Nearly everyone will get a cavity at some point in their life– no matter how thoroughly you brush or frequently you floss. A combination of your genetics, the alignment of your teeth and jaw, and other factors can lead to small cavities, even in people with otherwise outstanding dental health habits.

At Timberhill Dental, we know the key to minimizing the damage caused by tooth decay is early detection and treatment. That’s why we use the DIAGNOdent® laser decay detection system. It allows us to find cavities not visible to the naked eye, as well as cavities in locations that are difficult to check using traditional methods.

Understanding Your Cavity Risk

There’s more to avoiding cavities than simply brushing and flossing regularly. In order to keep your teeth and mouth healthy, you need to look at the big picture and risk factors you may not be aware of. When you meet with Timberhill Dental staff, we’ll talk with you about:

  • How the DIAGNOdent® system works and how it can help you
  • Any tooth decay he finds on your teeth
  • Risk factors that may predispose you to tooth decay
  • Your desire to maintain a natural, white, and healthy smile for a lifetime

Did You Know?

The DIAGNOdent® is especially useful because the fluoride in water and toothpaste can actually make small cavities very hard to detect. Visually inspecting the tooth, radiographic rays, or probing the tooth with a dental instrument isn’t a reliable way to discover the smallest cavities.

That’s why we use the DIAGNOdent® laser to find decay that other dentists may miss. The DIAGNOdent® uses painless beams of light to search out areas of decay. The sooner we find and treat your decay, the healthier your teeth and mouth will be.

At Timberhill Dental, we believe an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure. That’s why we use the latest technology, including the DIAGNOdent® laser to identify decay before serious damage is done. Other advantages of early cavity detection include:

  • Smaller cavities are easier to fill and require minimal removal of healthy tooth structure
  • Smaller cavities cost less to fill

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental fillings last?

DIAGNOdent® is a very accurate and useful diagnostic tool. In fact, according to this study, DIAGNOdent® had an accuracy of 97%, while a visual examination was only 52% accurate.

Can you spot a cavity too early?

There’s no such thing as detecting a cavity too early. When it comes to dental health, the sooner we discover these types of issues, the better we can treat them.

Will small cavities ever get better on their own?

Cavities do not heal naturally, no matter how small they are. If you already have a cavity, it’s important to treat it as soon as possible. If that’s your case, we’ll be happy to help you at our practice.

How do you treat cavities?

There are different types of treatments for cavities. Depending on the severity of your condition, your dentist may recommend you one of the following:

  • Fillings: At Timberhill Dental, we use minimally invasive tooth-colored composite fillings.
  • Crowns: This is a good option for severely affected teeth. This procedure restores the tooth’s original shape and size.
  • Root canal: This type of treatment is used to treat severe issues, in which the cavity has reached the tooth’s pulp and caused an infection.

How can you prevent cavities?

Almost everyone gets a cavity at least once in their lifetime. However, you can avoid them by following these simple recommendations:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride-containing toothpaste.
  2. Floss every day to clean between your teeth.
  3. Rinse daily with a fluoride-containing mouthwash.
  4. Get regular teeth cleanings and exams from your dentist twice a year.
